To make my life so much easier as a college student in general, I use my laptop quite extensively. I have a 2011 macbook Air and thank God for it everyday! Everything I do and have ever done so far in college is stored a click away in my Mac. For my Pre-Secondary degree, I definitely use both my Mac as well as my iPhone. Although, I only use my iphone as a source of communication and check resources. I have not used any extracurricular apps on my iphone 5 since the iphone 4.
Applications in my opinion are faster ways to access things on a daily basis. In today's 'app world' everything you want is just a click away. All one has to do is download the app and then begin to use it! I have a note taking app on my iPhone that I use sometimes in a hurry. On my Mac, I have word processing apps as well as other apps that allow me to do my daily homework for college; such as realplayer, shockwave, etc. Apps are technically a "short cut" that make everyone's life a tad bit easier.
Smartphones and computer apps are definitely tools for both instructors and students. It is a fast way to stay connected and keep in touch with students and instructors. I e-mail my professors all the time and like to have a constant communication when not in class.
