Introduction
Welcome to the Word World! Every ‘word’ contains one or more of the following: a prefix, suffix, or root. In this activity you will be acting like language experts and making your own words by matching a prefix, suffix and a root. A prefix is a word element that you connect to the beginning of a word to change its meaning. A suffix is also a word element that changes a words meaning but it is at the end of a sentence. The root serves as a ‘base’ for a prefix or suffix. As a group, after creating your list of words, you will write a definition of what you think each word means using only the definitions of the elements. (**As always, the words you put together have to be actual words and not gibberish! This is still a language arts class J**))
The Task
The point of this task is to be able to recognize a short list of common prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Through the websites and photos I provide, you and your group will work as a team of three to create words and puzzle them together. As a group, you will learn to work together smoothly just like words can be created using three different components.
The Process
1. First you will be assigned into a group with a total of three students.
2. Each student will be assigned one of the elements. For example, one student will be in charge of finding a prefix, the second a suffix, and the third, a root.
3. Watch this YouTube video explaining how prefixes, suffixes and roots work.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOJrjNR7ZZM
· Write on separate pieces of paper the definition of the element that you have. Each group will sit together in the computer lab but work on separate computers. Each student with the assigned word element will pick an element either at random or one that he/she likes. http://quizlet.com/17828962/6th-grade-prefixes-and-suffixes-flash-cards/#
· http://www.prefixsuffix.com/rootchart.php
4. When everyone in the group has picked a word element, group together and attempt to make a word with the prefix, suffix, and root that was chosen.
FOR EXAMPLE: Rose picked the prefix ‘pro’ which means ‘in favor of’. John picks the suffix ‘ed’ which means ‘past’ and Ben picks the root word of ‘tract’ which means ‘pull, drag’. The full word they can put together is ‘pro-tract-ed’. Advice: If the elements do not match, go back and try to puzzle ones that will. Make sure that the words make sense!!
5. Lastly, try to come up with a definition of what the word means
6. Using the elements chosen. Using the example ‘protracted’, from the element meanings I concur that the word means when something is in ‘favor of pulling or dragging for a long time’.
7. Using this website below check what the word actually means and see how your group does!
